After replacing the impeller and putting things back together, I have neutral and reverse, but cannot shift into forward gear. I've
worked painstakingly to insure the upper and lower shift rods are connected properly...I can't see anyway I can change things there
for the better. I removed the upper screw, moved the shift lever into forward, and applied pressure upward while replacing the screw
tightly. Since last having the boat in the water I used an authorized mechanic to help connect the upper/lower rods and recall seeing
him "tinker" in the gear shift lever area, possibly making adjustments there. Obviously the rod is too long, preventing the lever to
shift into forward. Is my first step to make adjustment(s) in the gear shift lever area to shorten the rod? Help, please, so I can quit
working and get to fishing! Thanks...
 
Sorry for the delay, Jim...thanks for responding. No... I was just attempting to put things back together right and insuring the shift rod was
seated properly in the connector. I didn't know I should have the engine running to make the shifts...thought it proper to insure all the shifts
worked BEFORE screwing things back together. Respond again, if you will, Jim. I gather I should go ahead and put it together, then HOPE and
EXPECT all the gears will work? I'm satisfied there are no other problems to affect the shifting. I'm anxious to hear back, Jim. Thanks!

If the engine shifted properly before you installed the impeller, the shift rod is the correct length.

No pressure is needed upwards or downwards when connecting the shift rods to the brass shift connector.

Simply line up the groove(s) in the shift rods with the bolt holes in the brass shift connector, insert the bolt(s) and tighten.

Does the lower unit shift into forward when it is on your workbench (off the engine)? Note that the propeller will need to be turned while moving the shift rod up/down in order to align the shifter lobes of the shifter dog and the gears.

Thanks, joereeves...I assume you hold the shift lever to forward in order to keep the upper rod down while inserting into the
connector? For some reason it's a nightmare for me to insert fully and replace the upper screw. I'm told that I shouldn't expect
to shift forward without the engine running. No?? I haven't yet put the lower unit on the bench but expect I'll need to. Anymore
thoughts I'd greatly appreciate. Again, thanks...
