I am new to this forum but have enjoyed some things i have read. I am relatively new to boating and purchased a maxum boat with a 4.3 L v6 chevrolet mercruiser engine. Since i have bought this boat i have had problems. At first i had starting problems (engine would try to crank but would never actually turnover) and took it to a mechanic who said it was a coil problem. We replaced the coil and it fired up and ran fine until we accelerated to above about 30 mph. It has a 4 barrel carburetor on it and it seems as long as i never open it up it is fine. When i do hit the throttle really hard it bogs and eventually dies at which point i cannot crank it. yesterday i took it out and it ran fine as long as we did not full throttle. At the end of the day we decided to try it and it sputtered at around 35 mph and then started sputtering. we took it down to idle and it revved up a couple of times before dying. I know i kinda rambled but if any help would be appreciated.

"Sounds like a fuel problem. I would change filters and drain and refill the tank with fresh fuel. The likely reason it won't restart right away after bogging is that the elec fuel pump does not run until the starter is engaged, at which point it has to refill the carb bowl before it will start.
Many people have found that 4.3's with the Weber 4 barrel are a bear to start after a few days of non-use for the same reason. My own 4.3 LX suffered with this problem since new. I finally cured it by wiring a push-button switch to run the fuel pump before starting, so as to prime the carb.

"Thanks rod i will try that. Could this be the reason for the bog at higher speeds, the fuel filter?"

"Plugged fuel filters, or insufficient fuel delivery for whatever reason, is the most common cause for lack of power under load or at high speed.

My mechanic has told me that t

My mechanic has told me that there is a possible clog in the fuel line coming from the fuel tank. He says it is a common problem and to just remove it and everything should work fine. Have you ever heard of this. He says it is a filter right where the fuel tank and fuel line first begin.

"I think he is talking about t

"I think he is talking about the strainer at the bottom of the fuel pickup fitting in the tank. It is easy enough to remove the fitting and pickup tube from the bottom of the tank and check it. Also dissassemble and check the anti-syphon valve right in the elbow of the fitting that goes in the top of the tank. They can also gum up with crud. That may be all it is. If all this checks OK, then I would replace all other fuel filters and see how she runs then.
