Possible fuel problem???

I have an early 80's Mercury 35 hp outboard that i just cant get to run consistently... Sometimes it runs great all day and sometimes it starts out running great then after an hr of sitting i go to run it and it runs like its bogged down... sometimes when its running like its bogged down I'll hear it cough a few times then it takes off like its fine... Just last weekend it ran great till after it sat for an hour then all it would do is barely idle and only run bogged down at half throttle. When i would give it full throttle it would fall on its face and die out.. Usually the fuel filter is always full of fuel reguardless of how it runs except for this time i checked it and it was only about half full of fuel... It has me thrown for a loop!! Any help would be great!! Thank you

Start with:the tank,check for water and garbage in the bottom..Check the hose for soft spots.Ethanol is causing damage.
Rebuild the fuel pump.Replace all the hoses(squeezie too).Replace all the filters.Clean the carbs.Make sure to remember the settings on the air screws.Start with these and post the results.J

Good advise. You also might need to readjust the idle mixture screw.
