possible blown head gasket??

Hello everyone! I am obviously new here so let me introduce myself. My name is Curtis and I reside in Winter Haven, Fl. I bought this Maxum about a month ago and have had no real issues with it until this past weekend. I bought it from a guy who used it in brackish water. I live on a fresh water lake and have kept it in there since I purchased it (removed it when i needed to fill it up or bad weather). I took it out into Tampa bay this weekend and within one hour the engine had shut off. I was running 3/4 speed (maybe 3 minutes) with 6 people and their stuff when I brought it back to neutral. At that time the engine kind of shuttered and it stopped. Would not restart, not even crank without having this god awful sound. Got it home and removed the spark plugs and found water in #1 and #5 cyl. Cranked it with the ignition wire removed and it shot the water out. Put a few squirts of oil into each hole and cranked it again. Put in new plugs, hooked up the earmuffs and cranked it. Started right up, ran for 30 seconds to a minute warming up and i brought the throttle into neutral. It did the same thing. Pulled all the odd plugs again and found water in #'s !,5, and 7. Found nothing in the evens initially so I didn't pull those back off. I have already bought the intake and head gasket. I know it needs to be pulled apart to know for sure, but does it sound like it could be a cracked head?? I wouldn't think so since I was able to start it up again, but I am by far a mechanic. I am looking forward to working on it, I am going to get a book tonight for the engine. Any other suggestions would definitely be helpful as I want to get it running asap. Thanks in advance!!

do a compression test if the cyls. are with in 15% its proble bad manifolds.witch you can take off and get pressure tested. if comp. is low in one or two cyls. youll have to pull the head. how old is the motor? do we know if the manifolds wrer ever changed?

The motor/lower unit is supposedly an '09. Was put in new by previous boat owner because he bought boat with no motor/lower unit originally. Have not been able to find the engines serial number yet though.

Maybe you injested water through a missing/broken exhaust shutter when you slowed down.

Thats what my dad said also. But it did the same exact thing when I had the earmuffs on today. So that kind of confuses me. I took of the intake manifold tonight and there is water/oil in the bottom. Gonna take the heads oFf in the morning and see if I have a cracked head or a possible head gasket problem. I will also check the exhaust shutters too. Will let you all know how it turns out.

Forgot to report that i did the compression test and had no higher than 70 psi per cylinder. Haven't seen the pan yet, but dipstick didn't show any indication of water in the pan. Although, I don't know how that would be possible when the water is already in the valve body and in the heads.

If it was my boat w/those comp. #s I would be ordering a reman. longblock w/new exhaust mans. and be done w/it and be back on the water in 2 weeks.

Ok, sorry for the delay in posting, but I removed both heads and found the crack in the odd side head above the #5 cylinder. Also head gasket was blown around #5. Took to a machine shop where they verified the crack. He asked me if this engine was ever stored up north because the crack was in the same area as a "freeze crack". Previous owner told me he put it in new in '09. It was transfered from a new boat into this one because owner of that boat wanted a different engine. I know, I know, engine very well could have blown and was refurbished then sold. But that's what could happen when buying a used boat. Question I have is, does anyone know where I could find 2 reman. heads for a V8 5.7 vortec with a 6 hole (casting # 6217)?? Any help would be appreciated!!

I'm sorry, but could you fisher price that down for me a little?? What is a reman. longblock? And how would I go about obtaining one? I am still a rookie when it comes to engines.

it's a new engine. minus the bolt on stuff that survived the damage that you don't need anyways ....

want brand new? - go to any Mercruiser dealer in your neighbourhood for prices
want locally rebuilt? - look in the yellow pages under engines -rebuilders

Rapido Marine is in Fla and does a lot of business with boaters, especially DIY types, and marinas.
