Poppett valve replacement

"I took off my thermostadt housing cover to replace the thermostadt but am not sure if I should replace the poppett valve as well.How can I tell if mine is still good or if it needs replaceing? It is not melted nor is the rubber gasket cracked or dry rotted,but it does have some traces of old gasket material around the rim of the rubber gasket."

"I ordered parts to replace the poppett valve even though it was in good shape , but I did not order the poppett valve carrier. Is this a big deal? I wanted to keep this simple and not get into taking the carrier out.The one in there doesn't look like there is anything wrong with it."
