poppet valve install

mercury 40hp 402. got a new poppet valve kit and don,t know the direction the poppet goes in. the old one was melted bad. the kit came with a poppet, washer,spring and grommet. i think it goes x side down on poppet but i,m not sure. can,t find a exact diagram online.. thanks...
