This is a 40 hp EFI factory mounted on a 2017 Tracker Pro Team Bass Boat
I bought this used one owner boat from a local Tracker dealer in MI February. The boat and trailer looked brand new, like it had no time on the water.
There are a lot of details in this description so please read everything before taking your best shot
Specifics:
Factory 3 blade prop
Myself and son are both heavy set so the boat is loaded to 500+ lbs
We have been on many different lakes on both warm and cold days, and the performance is always the same
Issue:
Engine starts and idles fine
From trim down then moving the throttle to full in 3 seconds
Engine rpm goes up to 4000
Boat takes 10 seconds to get to 10 mph, 20 seconds to get to 15 mph, engine rpm is now maxed at 4600
Trimming the motor up slightly and moved my son to sit on rod locker
Boat reaches top speed of 21 mph at 30 seconds and 4600
The last 3" of the boat throttle has no effect on RPM or speed
Things I have done and tried to the boat and motor
Checked both spark plugs. they look fine, gaps are fine
Checked the throttle cable and throttle travel, both good
Drained all the original gas out and filled 1/2 tank with 93 premium
Checked the speedometer with a GPS
Replace the factory 3 blade prop with an OEM Spitfire 4 blade recommended pitch for 40-60 HP, gained maybe 2 mph
The new prop made no noticeable improvement in hole shot time as what is typical for this boat-motor combo.
Ran the same exact test with and without my 300 SE Sport Cavitation Plate
Without the plate the performance improves maybe 5-8% overall (about what was expected)
I live in MI so the dealer here is not open. I talked to a technician at a Georgia BPS and he said I have basically tried everything. He thought this engine on this boat should be running about 5500 RPM and on a loaded boat run about 30 MPH.
The tech said if the engine was in limp mode it would be limited to 2500 RPM
The only comparison I have not tried yet is leaving my son on the dock, but I don't see the engine performance changing that dramatically. My only course of action is to have the dealer check the computer for fault codes. It would be great if someone had some idea of what the issue might be.
Thanks for viewing.
