Point Settings 1955 25hp

I have a 1955 Johnson 25 that is giving me trouble on setting the points. What I am having difficulty with is setting the gap. When it says TOP and it is lined up with the points on the crank it is at its smallest point gap. There is a ring on the crankshaft that the points set on I noticed I can manually move this. Should this ring be locked? Should it be at the farthest gap when near TOP? Has anyone seen this? Thanks in advance.

Re: Point Settings

Thanks JB. What I am seeing is a washer(?) that has a spring below it that is under the cam. I can push down on the cam and the points will sit on the cam. If I let go the spring pushes this washer up and is causing my problem. I am guessing that the flywheel will push and hold this washer down so the points sit on the cam???

Re: Point Settings

That's a spring and washer setup that keeps pressure downward on the top main bearing seal.

Temporarily remove it so that it will not cause the cam to jump up. Now, set the points as follows, then reinstall the spring, washer etc. Sometime just tapping the flywheel key slightly to apply pressure on the cam to keep it in place.

Re: Point Settings

The tapping of the key pushed down on the spring enough to be able to set the points. The key did move quite a bit and now is setting on the cam. Is the key supposed to be perpendicular to the crank? If so, mine is not any longer. I have tried to attached a pic. Thank you.

Re: Point Settings

OK, so it does have to be perpendicular since the flywheel will not slide on.

With the key on better and the flywheel on a bit, it seems to be dragging on something. Perhaps the coil? Getting dark now will try again.

Did accomplish getting the points though.

Thanks again.

Re: Point Settings

The flywheel key must be the same height as the slot in which it is retained. It must also be aligned so that it is vertical with the engine (straight up and down), not aligned with the crankshaft taper.

Set the points as follows. Have the flywheel key aligned with the fiber rubber portion of the ignition points. Adjust the gap so that a .020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not. Should there be any question of the points being dirty (touching the contact with your finger would cause them to be dirty), clean them with a small brush and acetone or lacquer thinner.
NOTE: Should the operating cam have a small portion on it with the word "SET" imprinted, align this portion with the fiber rubbing portion instead of the flywheel key.
