Can anyone tell me the points

Can anyone tell me the points Gap setting on a 1988 OMC Cobra 5.7 and is there any tricks to setting them I should know.Thanks

"Point gap is .017, I prefer to use a dwell meter to really set them though and that should be between 27-31 deg. Your idle RPM (in gear) should be betwen 500-600. After you set the points then you should check/adjust the timing at 10 deg BTDC."

The engine (in my case an '89 4.3) seems to start, idle, run just fine. It has been this way since I got the boat (about 5 years). Should I be worried about a distributor problem?"
