please help with wiring issue 1985 235hp

hello i have a 85 model 235 johnson on a 22ft center console i just purchased, the boat has several years of giddjets and gaddjets that have been wired up to create a mess,i attempted to fix the wiring problem today by eliminating all the "unnecassary" jumble of wires, well now the motor cranks over even with the key switch off,as soon as you connect the battery it starts cranking.does anyone know of a simple wiring diagram to use to just wire the necassary componets all i want is the key switch to start the motor and the trim on the shifter to work.thank you for any help with this,i am going on vacation next week and was really hoping to get some catfishing in with my new boat...

Re: please help with wiring issue

thank you guys for the replys,i got home this evening took the cover off and tapped on the soelinoid and presto problem fixed:) now should i replace the soilenoid or wait and see if it happens again? anyways i would like to replace all the wiring on the motor and all the way to the switch because they are in bad shape and i would like to prevent a breakdown on the water.is there a complete new wiring harness still available for this motor?thanks again guys this is a great forum with some great folks willing to help others.

Re: please help with wiring issue

A sicking solenoid is caused by operating he system with a faulty or low battery. The low voltage results in excess arcing withing the solenoid which in turn results is a weld of sorts between the plunger and the two large inner contacts.

This solenoid problem will not got away but will just get worse. The cure is to replace the solenoid and operate the rig with a known good fully charged battery.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay store at:

Re: please help with wiring issue

make sure your conections on trim pump are clear if they are add son electric grease to them you can find that at any auto parts store, have someone push the trim button and test your leads going in to pump to make sure there hot if not hot then check your wires going to your button and just the other side of button this will determan if you got fire on both sides of switch if you do you have a broken wire on the back side of switch going to pump, if you dont have fire infront of switch follow wires untill you find power supply or power source it could be a fuse or a faulty ground, pay attention to the colour you might find the other end where it might have been cut, hope this helps some
