"First let me start with I'm on vacation. I put my 1972 Century Arabian in the water today and @ idle it seemed fine. When I throttled up I got Nothing, my port side exhaust coughed and the engine started bogging down while in gear. I think it is a carb/choke problem, can enyone give me advice----I haven't checked anything out yet, I'm going to wait until tomorrow."

Did you try replacing the fuel filter. When was the last time that you went through the ignition system? What type of ignition? Distributor (points and condenser or breakerless electronic?)

"My choke was sticking----I cleaned the carb up and was working good, but occasional would bog out when trying run it up---I'm going to have the carb rebuilt over winter."

"Sounds like a classis case of fuel gum-up in the carb, probably a clogged main jet. When the engine sits during the hot summer weather, the fuel in the carb bowl evaporates and leaves behind a gummy residue which has a very unique smell. Try putting fuel stabilizer into the tank when not using the boat for long periods of time. Also check the fuel pick-up tube in your fuel tank for obstructions. We were out in a 72 Lyman last summer with a Chrysler LM318, idled fine, would run at 2000 rpm for a few minutes then would cut out. Replaced fuel filter, replaced fuel line, checked ignition, etc. Finally found a large black ant sucked up into the fuel pickup tube partially blocking fuel flow. As soon as we ran the RPMS up, the fuel level in the carb bowl would drop due to low flow and engine would cut out. A real "bug" in this case. Good luck!!"

Sounds to me you have a bad diaprham in the fuel pump. Some pumps have a tube that feeds back into the carb to flood the engine when the diaphram goes bad. Pull your dip stick and check for gas in the oil.
