New to the forum but thanks for the help in advance.... I hit a stump and the shift rod died on a 8hp johnson j8resr.... so after taking it apart the clutch dog/shift rod was so worn out I replaced the forward gear because the lobes were worn out where the ball bearings engage the gear along with the internal prop shaft spring the bearings and shift shaft in the prop shaft and the water impeller and all gaskets.... thought I was golden and took it out... now it hammers when forward. It sounds like it skips out of gear revs a little then goes back in gear and the whole motor jumps when it does this... plugs are good and dry... I don't know where to look next... any suggestions .. thanks

you replaced the gear... did you replace the clutch dog? did you set the gear lash correctly? did you replace the pinion gear?

So far I have replaced parts 15, 12, 10, 33x4 and the water impeller.... I'm thinking about going ahead and getting 29 the shift cam, I did not set any lashing as it seemd the gear just slid under the pinion gear into the race. The pinion gear looks good.

Yeah i replaced the gear, i replaced the clutch dog, but i did not replace the pinion gear it looked good... there didnt really seem any way to set the lashing as the gear just slid into the race with no problem.... i did not replace the race because i didn't have a puller

You have replaced all the shifter parts , so I do not believe the problem is in the lower unit.----------Any chance the parts up top are not turning part #29 properly ?-----Last one of these I worked on had the 2 balls for forward missing.-----Someone took it apart and was mystified by this shift set-up and sold the motor.--Installed 2 new balls and it worked perfectly.
