Play in steering

Hope someone can help, I have searched but did not find my same problem. I have a 1996 Rinker Captiva w/ a merc 454 mated to a bravo 1 o/d w/ power steering. My steering has always been tight then all at once there was about 1/2 turn on the wheel before the o/d turned. I found the sloop in the tube that the steering cable threads to. This tube slides left to right about 1 inch within the power steering unit actuator. There is a small set screw at the 12 o clock pos. that is tight and a gland type nut w/ holes around the circumference that is also tight. I do not see any type of jam nuts to hold this tube/ guide within the p/s assy. The sloop is not something that has been wearing over time, something just let loose. On another note, I never used to be able to turn the steering wheel by pushing on the o/d, it was solid, now I can easily push the o/d from stop to stop. Any help would be appreciated.

You also want to check the gimble ring and swivel pin. Takes two people, one in the boat and the other swinging the drive back and forth. If the drive moves and the steering arm does not, then you have a big problem.

Ayuh,.... Sounds like ya need a new P/S actuator, 'n More....

Ya gotta take it a part to see what's broken, 'n where....

Thanks for the help everyone but the play is not in the o/d or gimbal assy it is in the p/s act. There is a tube that the steering cable slides thru, this tube is sliding to the left and right within the p/s assy and it got loose all of a sudden, not over time.

Hello all,
I found this old thread while searching for a solution to the same problem. I am wondering if anyone has any advise?
The boat is a '95 Cobalt 454/Bravo One. Steering has a ton of play and it all seems to be at point where the cable goes into the steering unit. Both the cable and the sliding section of the steering unit have obvious play.
Niterider, did you ever find the cause?
I am planning to remove the steering unit and see what I can see.....

Grab the outdrive and see if it swings side to side easily.
