Planing problem

"I have just purchased a used

"I have just purchased a used '93 Nitro Rick Cleveland Edition. It has a '93 115 pro series Hp Evinrude Motor. I am having trouble getting the boat to plane. The trimming system works fine;however, after countless attempts of trimming the boat still will not plane. I have bought performance fins to place on the cavitation plate. It still will not plane. The former owner says that it may the pick-up coil. Every time I trim the motor upwards, it seems as though the rpms increase, unfortunately as I trim the motor downward, it planes, but it isn't traveling very fast. Please advise."

"Start with a compression test

"Start with a compression test to be sure the motor is in good mechanical condition. If the RPM's increase but the boat stays at the same speed, check for a slipping propellor hub. Is the boat hull clean and free of marine growth??? You will need to give more specific information about the boat and how it performs for anyone to formulate a specific cure for your problem."

"Also, what are the compressio

"Also, what are the compression readings (all), and (with the spark plugs removed) is there spark on all cylinders at cranking speed that will jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame.... a real SNAP?"

"The boat's weight is abou

"The boat's weight is about 1200lbs. This is my first boat so I am a beginner with boat terminology. Would the slipping propellor hub be located behind the prop? Would I need to purchase a compression test instrument? The boat's hull is clean and free of marine growth. When I press down my hot foot for acceleration, it doesn't pick up speed. I have had it to plane only 3 times out of 20 boat uses. As far as rpms, my RPM gauge is not working as well as my speedometer. There is no thrust to accelerate."

Check Your prop for spun hub.

Check Your prop for spun hub. Take it off and bring it to a dealer. At the same time order a new tach so we have something to work with.

"The propellor hub is a rubber

"The propellor hub is a rubber device which is mounted between the propellor and the hub. It is one of the three pieces which make up the propellor and acts as a cushion to dampen vibrations and to prevent damage if the propellor strikes an underwater object. If it were defective, the engine would Rev up but the boat would not increase in speed. Hubs can be replaced by a propellor shop or you could simply purchase a new propellor with the proper pitch and dimensions for your boat. You can purchase a compression tester from any auto parts store or have a test done for about $40.00. Usually a motor with compression problems will not idle smoothly."
