1977 115 evinrude. forward gear teeth broken, pinion gear has broken teeth. the pinion locknut has been rounded off and I can not get socket on it to take off. Has any one run into this problem, how do I get the nut off so I can pull the drive shaft.

Lock the skeg in a vice or rig some way that the propshaft area would be facing straight up. If a suitable chisel is not among your tools, file or grind a chisel edge on a sturdy piece of steel that will fit into that area to hit the pinion nut in a counter clockwise direction. I've used this method to break a beat up pinion nut loose, after which it easily spins off.

I use a 7/8" open end and a special socket on the upper spline to take the nut off .----------------------------------Sounds like a used lower unit is going to be the best bet here.

thanks I am going to try and use the chisel idea and see what goes. the gears cost alot and so does a used lower unit. I also had some ball bearings come rolling out once I pulled the reverse gear out. will a '77 85hp Evinrude lower end work on my motor? I found one on craigslist.

According to my OMC parts book, the complete lower unit assembly of the 1977 85hp and the 115hp Evinrude/Johnson are identical.
