Is there a measurement that ca

Is there a measurement that can be used to properly shim the pinion gear on this motor if I do not have access to the shimming kit?

The gauge bar used in the shimming kit measures 8.273 inches, and with one end against the flange of the bearing housing the clearance between the other end and the pinion gear shoulder should be .020 inches with shims, and thrust bearing and washer installed and the pinion nut torqued. You should push the bearing housing and bearing against the driveshaft shoulder when measuring.

The squareness of the flange and shoulder with the driveshaft should also be checked.

"Thanks Tony, Just to clarify, you are saying the distance between the lower side of the flange and the top of the gear should measure 8.293 inches when set up correctly? I have access to good quality calibrated micrometers so this should not be a problem. I plan to measure the old one first to see what the factory setting was. The motor has +- 600 hrs on it and a few of the pinion and forward gear teeth have pitting on the face. the reverse gear shows no signs of wear. The lower unit has never had water in it and the oil is changed every season. Is this common for a motor with 600 hrs?

There is no doubt that this will work. It is just a lot easier with the shimming tool.

Measured with calipers and che

Measured with calipers and checked with optical comparater. Somewhat difficult to keep the calipers square to insure a good measurement. I can see how the shimming kit would make it easier. Also confirmed the factory measurement to spec to make sure of the methods used. It was right on the money. Thanks for the information.
