pinion and forward gear replacement

I have purchased a new set of pinion and forward gears for my 1988 60 hrs Johnson motor. The repair manual says that proper shimming is essential when replacing these gears. Is it common that the shim used in the previous set would not be correct for the new set? It appears that the tools needed for proper shimming are very expensive for the do-it-yourselfer such as I.

Shimming may be essential "IF" you are replacing the driveshaft, but even then, if the original D/S shims are okay, one can usually get away with simply reusing them... never gave me a problem.

So....... If you're not replacing the driveshaft, ignore that portion of the instructions.

Assemble the pinion on the driveshaft. Take the upper bearing housing , driveshaft assemly to your friendly dealer. They can check the shimming in a matter of minutes.-----Money well spent !!

Gears were damaged. I think a bearing and seal went bad causing loss of lube. I am replacing the propeller shaft bearings and seals. There is some play in the clutch bearing unless I have the forward gear engaged. Wondering if it is a tapered type of bearing?? I am going to have a professional look at it.
