"Well I had the "mechanic&

"Well I had the "mechanic" look at my boat about the overheat problem on starboard 270 1986 Crusader. He changed the starboard raw water impeller and hoses to both heat exchangers. He also cleaned the port heat exchanger and it wasn't dirty enought to justify cleaning the starboard. I was a little miffed that he didn't start with the starboard heat exchanger since that was the one I was having overheat problems with. It still could be dirty!!! Anyway we had Ike come through and the mechanic hurridly put it back together and dropped it in my slip. (not tied up properly i might add). I noticed that my port shift lever of my morse controls now does not "act" the same as the other. I am sure this is probably an adjustment. I took both zinc pencils out of the heat exchangers and there were no "pencils" on them. I guess no one has ever changed these in the 20 years the boat has been around. The problem is that the mechanic says the pencil on the starboard engine is stuck or something is blocking the hole for h im to put the zinc back in. He says there is essentially nothing that can be done because removing the soldiered caps can cause leaks and other problems. HE says that it isn't that big a deal to run without it, since it has been done for 20 years now. But that was in fresh water, now im in salt. This mechanic also dropped the boat off with not only the shift lever problem, but all the hoses he changed (i could only see the hoses he changed on the heat exchanger) but everything was single clamped, I thought I remembered they were double clamped before but I could be mistake,. When he returned the boat the thing had footprints and grease from one side to the other. He also has been squirley on a few other issues. He has charged me 15 hours to change the RW impellor on the starboard, clean 1 heat exchanger, and replace a few hoses. Is this excessive, or am I being a picky prick? BTW the engine still overheats."

"Finding overheat issues can b

"Finding overheat issues can be a bit tricky. Most of the time, it is related to low raw water flow. Many of the reasons: old/plugged risers, kinked RW suction hose, worn pump cam, scored pump cover, zinc eroded/plugged oil cooler, plugged heat exchanger, bits of old impeller pieces plugging oil cooler, oysters in your u/w pickup.
I don't think double clamps on the HE is typical or necessary. I like the import, 316stainless variety for salt water usage.
I do believe the "i don't want to unsolder the HE cap story". Once you let the genie out, its hard to get it all back together. Although on the BB HE, the end cover will reveal the zinc cavity."
