Petrol additives - are they worth it?

Very hard not to get carried away believing the hype. Have added ChemTech's Petrol Power (I am in Oz) which they say has all these miraculous fuel enhancing properties - engine starts OK and now I am not sure which one of the many factors that I have changed is significant.
Also using Shell VPower (98 Oct) with a few drops of Nulon lead substute.
Bit like taking vitamins - there's a "just in case" - factor I am sure - what do you guys here think?

Thanks Rick

Been doing a bit more reading - this from Wickipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shell_V-Power -has a summary of Shell petrol products worldwide

In Australia, from October 2006, Shell and Coles Express re-branded Optimax to V-Power (98 RON). V-Power Racing, the ultra-high performance variant has a rating of 100 RON although Shell have decided to phase out V-Power Racing from 21 July to mid August 2008, instead recommending V-Power.[SUP][5][/SUP] The previously obtainable higher grade V-Power Racing which contained 5% ethanol to boost V-Power's octane rating to 100 RON has now been phased out by Shell due to a "changing market".
Shell have a product here in Oz with ethanol but I should be OK with the V-Power I hope.

How old is your engine that you are using a lead substitute ??? If engine was designed for lead free gas, adding lead is not a benefit.

The previous owner was using a substitute (family were car mechanics) and I sort of carried on from there. Its an AQ 151 from the mid 80's when I presume nearly all these engines had leaded fuel (I am not sure of the date of manufacture - something to check out). I have an old VW Beetle - same vintage - that shakes a ball in a can of tin in line in the fuel system that was marketed at the time lead stopped being used. I have no idea if it works but here I am in 2017 with the same engine. Someone I spoke to years back said that you can see the tin all over when the head is off. The Chem Tech additive is quite popular in our boat shops here.

Read somewhere once that once you ran a leaded gas engine on leaded gas for some time, you no longer needed to run it on leaded gas...just so long as you didn't clean the valves and seats. Don't know it its true...
