I have a Clymer manual for my 280 out drive that states that you should use Permatex No. 679 to seal the mating surfaces of the upper drive unit and the lower unit. I cannot find Permatex No. 679 and can find no reference to it on the net. I called Permatex at 1 87PERMATEX and spoke with their technical people who could also find no reference to 679. I went out and bought the Selco manual and it just refers to Permatex but no type or number. Can anyone tell me is there is a preferred Permatex type to use of the mating surfaces of a 280 outdrive? Thanks.

"You can use Permatex number 2

"You can use Permatex number 2 (soft) or Permatex Aviation Gasket. However, my favourite product is Mercury/Quicksilver "Perfect seal", which you can obtain at any Mercury/Mercruiser dealer. Loctite makes an equivalent product, named "Aviation gasket sealant"

Another equivalent of the above two products is the "OMC Gasket Sealing Compound). They are all basically the same thing with different names."
