Hi everyone. My Penta 270 outdrive on my 4 cylinder Volvo died.
Note: the AQ series drive pumps lower unit gear oil up to the transmission, where it then gravity feeds back down (this is for cooling of the transmission).
The cycle repeats continuously.
Point being..... if either the transmission or lower unit has gone back, the contaminated gear oil has run through both!
I found another 270 on another 4 cylinder Volvo, but I want to make sure it is a match before I pick it up and have it put on. How do I match the two up to make sure it is a usable part on my boat?
Pull the propeller.
Remove the Ring Anode.
Wire brush the AFT-most surface of the bearing carrier, and expose the numbers.
These numbers represent the final drive ratio.
Your engine requires the 2.15:1
It is too old to show up on the Volvo/Penta serial number search engine. I assume I have to make sure it is power trim. I
The 270 was NOT a PT drive.
think I am okay with gear ratio because they are both on a 4 cylinder Volvo. What else do I need to know?
People get this wrong quite often..... I'd check the ratio if I were you.
BTW... I heard on one site that a Penta 270 will bolt up to any Volvo 4 cylinder AQ*** engine without issue. I'm hoping that's the case...
It will be the "flywheel cover" that will bolt up to the Engine.
All AQ series flywheel covers will mate up to the AQ series transom shield.
Not all AQ stern drives will mate to all transom shields.
If you will post photos of your current drive, and of your proposed replacement drive, I would be glad to take a look.
Also note that when mixing/matching transmissions, Intermediate housings, and/or lower gear units..... the very critical shimming procedure MUST be followed !!!!!!!
FYI:
When removing an AQ series drive, we pull the transmission first, then the Intermediate housing with or without the lower unit installed.
Be very careful when removing the suspension fork "hinge pins". Heat is your friend!!!!
When re-installing, do so in reverse order......... transmission last!
