"I recently purchased a 2002 G

"I recently purchased a 2002 Glastron 185GX with a Volvo Penta 4.3GL engine. On my second outing, I forgot to reconnect the water pump (from winterization) and chewed up an impeller and overheated the engine. The audible alarm did not sound so the engine temp didn't get too hot. After replacement, I can't get the engine to rev over 3000RPM at WOT. The engine starts and runs fine below that with no misfire or unusual sound or noticible problem. It isn't an EFI so it isn't the "protection mode". It was suggested that maybe my fuel pump overheated and is no longer working at WOT. Any other ideas or suggestions?"

"Breaking up at high RPM typic

"Breaking up at high RPM typically indicates a problem with secondary ignition (plugs and wires most commonly) However, it is unlikely the overheat would cause this. It is also unlikely the fuel pump is the culprit. Try spraying a few short bursts of starting fluid (ether) into the flame arrestor while the engine is running poorly. If the misfiring is caused by a lean situation this will cause the engine to 'pick up'. A lean situation can be caused by an air leak after the carb (ie. warped base plate), or an internal malfunction in the carb. If nothing happens, look closer at ignition. I hope I have been of some help. Good luck!"

"Good advice El Pescador. I was jumping to the conclusion that the head gasket, valves, and rings are still intact after the overheat."

"Will do. Thanks for the inpu

"Will do. Thanks for the input. What compression should I expect? I don't have access to the boat for a while as I'm out of town. I'm hoping to find a few simple things I can do myself first and if they don't work, it's time to take it in to the repair shop. I would think that since the engine runs perfectly, (I used it Saturday for several hours, just not above 3000RPM), it can't be so serious as a warped block, blown rings or the like. I'd think if that had happened, the engine would not run or certainly run but very rough. Neiter of these is the case. It is just that when the throttle is pushed beyond the 2/3 position, nothing more happens."

"I would expect the compressio

"I would expect the compression to be about 140-155 psi; but most important, it should be very similar in all cylinders.

I believe your engine has a two barrel carb, so I would check that the choke is operating correctly and that the fuel fine filter in the carb is clean, as well as the flame arrestor. Other potential causes could be bad gas, a clogged main filter and a stuck anti-siphon valve."
