Pds bearing repair!!

Hello all,

New to the forum and looking for some help please! I have a 96 wellcraft 260 with a Volvo 7.4 and the older (white) out drive the dp-d1 drive on it!

The last two times out I started to notice a “growl” noise when in gear and gets louder when turning or when the drive it trimmed all the day down! So right away I’m thinking the gimble bearing but after doing some internet searching and reading previous posts on this forum I’ve come to find it has a “pds” bearing and not a traditional gimble bearing from what I understand!

So this is the job I guess I’m faced with and was wondering if someone could offer a little info on what is all involved in this job! I’ve tried to find videos or write ups of other guys doing this job but haven’t had much luck! Sounds like the motor has to come out.

Is there special tools I will need? What else might I find that need a to be replaced while I’m in there! I’ve done gimble bearings in the past on other boats but have no experience with this type of system.

Thanks in advance

By 1996, the last of the AQ series drives were using a single bearing PDS.
The PDS can be removed from AFT without the need to pull the engine.
The PDS bearing will come out with the PDS.
You will need to remove the transmission ONLY.

Use OEM O-rings only.

The DP requires gear oil........ not 30W or 40W Engine oil.

If it gets louder when you turn ( or trim down) likely bad bearings in the universal joint to the drive itself. When is the last time the boot over the universal was changed???
