"I am having a problem with this motor. The engine runs like a champ up to about 1600 RPMs then labors and bucks, spits and hesitates at the 1600 RPM mark. I have totally rebuilt my holley 650 carb, totally drained the gas tank and wiped clean, replaced all filters and even hooked to a auxillary fuel tank in case there was a problem in the tank. Checked compression and fuel pump pressure. I've isolated the exhaust in case there was an obstruction. I pulled the distributor to check for end play and inspected the centrifical advance, which was all OK. New cap, rotor points, condenser, coil and ballast resistor, plug wires and plugs The results are always the same. It seems that the misfires above 1400 RPMs are on the right bank of cylinders. I acts to me as if it is starving for fuel, but I have about 7 pounds of fuel pressure at the pump. I am at my wits end and would greatly appreciate any help I recieve. Thanks in advance......"

"That's pretty thorough Larry. here's a couple things that come to mind:

Does the pump maintain 7 psi when the misfires start or only at idle?

Did you check the fuel tanks vent line for obstructions?

Did you check the timing for smooth and stable advance with the engine running?

Have somebody verify the plug wires are on tight and in the proper order?

Last one - check the engine visually, when its running, in the dark of night - any high voltage 'leaks' are usually really easy to see then."

"I saw your posting about your issues with your engine. I have a 351 Pleasurecraft in my supra, and it stalls on me after I go for about 10 seconds at anything greater than 2k rpm. It started out at 3K, but now it seems to be doing it at anything over 1500 RPM. It starts and idles fine....but it seems to be taking longer to restart between stalls, as if the fuel pump needs time to prime. I had an electrical issue that shorted everything out, so I just replaced the starter, alternator, solenoid, and I had the carburetor rebuilt. When does it all end? I was going to replace the fuel pump, but I wanted to get your input. It sounds like you know a lot and you did a lot of great troubleshooting. I never found out if the fuel pump replacement actually took care of your issue, but your issue is nearly identical to mine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you in advance,

"Well I pleased to say the boa

"Well I pleased to say the boat is now running like a bear. And sure enough it was the Distributor.Upon inspection the inner working components seemed to look and work fine, so I am leaning towards the insulated connection where the points and condenser and wire leading to the coil are connected. There is signs of corrosion around the connection and my guess is it was bleeding thru voltage to ground. I priced a new distributor at NAPA and nearly fell over, so I looked on Ebay and found a new prestolite marine distributor for 75 Bucks!! (+15.00 shipping) The guy has about 70 of them. Thank God that it is finally solved, and thanks to all of you who took an interest in my problem and tried to help. Hope your summer's end is fantastic!!

"Thank you for the reply, Larr

"Thank you for the reply, Larry. Do you have a link to the Ebay auction? Is the Distributor the same across the board for all 351's or is specific to Pleasurecraft? I had a major short in my boat. It fried my solenoid 2x's and may have been responsible for me having to get the starter and alternator replaced. Do you think that could have zapped my Distributor, or would it simply be corrosion or something similar?

Thanks in advance!"

"FWIW, you may wanna get two if you are gonna buy. the reason is prestolite was sold in pieces and the distributors are no longer supported = no piece parts available new.

Larry - glad you got it fixed.

Ian - you may want to check your coil (& ballast resistor) as those are likely culprits, too."

i got mine fixed!!!!i took the

i got mine fixed!!!!i took the points out of it and threw them in the trash.i put in a electroninc kit.its called a pertronix igniter 2 and it runs like crazy.the rpm goes up to 4800.i love it.that was a good $99.00 well spent.
