"I have an '86 60Hp Mercur

"I have an '86 60Hp Mercury. I just put in a new starter and rebuilt the carbs, but I'm not sure how long the engine will last me before I need to sevice it again but I want to make it last at least another 5 years. I can get a 60hp mariner for parts (or to replace the merc.) for $250 with a serial number of A110880. The motor is in good condition except 1 piston is crap. I'm not even sure if that year is capable with my merc, but if it is, is it a good deal to get it instead of wasting $ on parts every time I need them? or is it a good Idea to switch it w/my merc?Any advice?"

"Nick, that Mariner will share

"Nick, that Mariner will share all it's parts with your motor - the only difference between the two of them is the paint -

BUT, 250 bucks for a blown 60 horse that is 23 years old is WAY too much money. The blown piston could possibly mean there is other problems with the motor.

If the seller wants to part it out themself, test all the parts and sell what is good they may well get 250 bucks for it, but as a whole unit it's basically nothing more than about 200 pounds of scrap aluminum (and I'm not trying to be funny).

Personally I wouldn't spend more than 100 bucks on the blown motor and only if it looked to be in decent shape otherwise. Running it would barely be worth 250 bucks..."
