"I have a 1972 luhrs with twin 318 and they are hooked to paragon pv-32 v-drives my problem is I have a bent shaft and strut and need to remove them ,I have found every view possible of these drives the only thing I never see is how the prop shaft attaches to the drive I cant get a good look at whats there and have unbolted a flange that also has 2 square bolts that must bite the shaft but not sure can anyone help me understand how to remove this dam shaft, thanks"

"That's all there is to it

"That's all there is to it. 4 bolts for the flange and the two that bite into the shaft. But that's just the beginning. After you separate the flanges, you have to get the shaft flange off of the shaft. Not usually easy, since they get very stuck after time. If the shaft is no good, I would saws-all the shaft in half to get it out."

"Thanks for that Rick, just wo

"Thanks for that Rick, just wondering which is the best place to unbolt the v-drive from, before or after the u-joint housing."

Thanks guys I got it out yeste

Thanks guys I got it out yesterday in one piece all we needed to do was heat it up with torch and we used a wheel puller to pull the flange from the shaft it was stubborn but came off my next question is the seal around the shaft where to get them I'm sure I'll need to replace it because a clamp fell off in the process

"Paul, Do you mean the seal where the shaft goes through the boat? That seal is a rope type seal and marinas should have some. The other type is a mechanical seal like a graphite collar. Those you have to order."

"Eero,

Are you trying to unbolt the v-drive from the trans? If so, I unbolted the trans and v-drive as one unit from the motor at the motor bell housing."

"Rick,

Wanting to seperate the v-drive from the trans. The boat is in the water and would be too difficult to remove both as one unit. Am having an irregular clunking noise from the v-drive when in gear. Suspect bad bearing. Should be starting new thread I know, but..."

"Sounds like the coupling migh

"Sounds like the coupling might be bad. That is the part in the housing between the v-drive and the trans. I had to pull the whole thing as one unit because there was not any room in the rear of the v-drive. I think that I needed 6" clearance to the rear if I did the v-drive only and only about 3" clearance for the whole unit. Either way it is simple, just a few bolts. I do remember that there was some trick getting the v-drive shaft back in the trans. Thats why I did the whole unit."

"I had to remove my vee and tr

"I had to remove my vee and tranny as one complete unit. I just stacked up cinder blocks on each side of the engine compartment, put a 4x4 fence post across them and used a chain and a come along, and a couple of friends. After a while, and some careful manuevering, I got it out. Getting it back in was tricky, but I used the same setup. Mine was a velvet drive with a walter vee. The paragon is smaller, so it might be a little easier to get out. I would take the whole thing out as one unit, and have it looked at, you dont want to put the drive back on and then have the trans go bad."
