" I have just bought a 1974 Islander 30 MKII with a Palmer P60 engine. I also have the P60 manual. However, it is not clear on how to determine the correct level of oil in the clutch assembly when it is changed. It says it should be no higher than one inch below the main drive shaft. There is no dipstick. I assume you remove the 4 bolts that hold the top inspection plate and look in with a flashlight. The manual warns against too much oil. Can anyone give me some guidance on this? Thanks. John "

I have that same Paragon OXKB gear on another engine... and yes that is the only way of checking the oil level... "Remove the hand hole plate.. " and visually inspect it. It some boats it would not be difficult, but I can imagine that installed as an auxilary in a sailboat it would be difficult to get to it.

" Same engine, I add until the bottom of the rear bearing just touches the oil. More is apparently no problem, I bought the tranny off a used P60, and the owner had kept it *completely filled* to the brim with oil. I was prepared for a pint or so and had to do some scrambling to find containers for several quarts during removal. No apparent damage, as there's a vent riser on the tranny, but he complained of a big power loss. "
