"Hi Rick,...
I usually always primer before top coating for a couple of reasons,....
1,.. It gives a common,+ neutral background so there's no shadows, or any other background differences in colors,... Especially when using very Light colored top coats....
2,... Primers give you 1 last chance for sanding out any lines, scratches, etc....
And then I also know I have a chemically compatable surface for the top coat paints....
Maybe I'm wasting my time,+ money using primer,... But I always have,+ Always had the Best of Results,.. So I keep doing it....
As for painting the Whole Hull,.....
I live up here on the Sweetwater Seas,.....
Here on the northeast corner of Lake Ontario,+ the St. Lawrence River,....
We just Don't have any Need for Bottom Paints.....
The only growths we have to deal with is the slight possibility of some light algae growth on the side of the boat where the sun hits it,+ it usually just washes off with a high speed run, or at worst, Hitting it with a Powerwasher when it's pulled for the season.....
Btw,..... My personal Choice of Bottom Paint for up here is Rustolium,.... It's very Slippery,+ almost self-cleaning......."
