"Please help. I have a vp 430b or 4.3gl engine that i have rstored to her former glory. About a month ago i was told in here that the reasion my engine is still running after the key is switched off is due to feed back to the coil from the alterantor, i was told that a resistror is availble from a vpenta dealer to cure this fault which acures after a unpgrade from the standard coil to a 12 coil and elect module. and when a 3 wired alternator is fittied.

I have tried every volvo penta dealer in the uk and no one can advise me of this part i need, if i can supply a part number it may obtainable. i have tried to search for this part but cannot find a part number any were, other than the ballast resistor which was removed when the upgrade is done.

Could any please advise if there is another route i could go down to rectify this problem as yet it is stopping me from goining in the water this year. or could any please advise were i may be able to obtain a part number so i could go to a dealer and try to order it.

Any advise would be realy realy appreciated

Thank you for you time in reading this message when i know it has already been mention by me

Sorry ... I ment to say .. are you sure the one that you removed was not the one to the alternator ?

"the ballast resistor i remove

"the ballast resistor i removed was sealed in a rubber square surround and it was joined to the purple wire on the coil side that went up to the relay. could this off been resistor,

Every thing looked original on this engine and it was the resistor looking thing i could find on the loom.

????????"

"thanks fro reply,

I put a meter across the resistor today and got no OHM reading so i tried my works calibrated meter and still no reeding, so took the decision to cut open the rubber outer and found the resistor inside rusted out and the outer sand caseing crumbled away. ( so deffo nakerd)

This has casued me no end of tears and the ongoing problem that it caused made me check every single loom connector-relays-dials-installed new key switch and alternator. and all down to this little thing.

thanks again to every one who replyied to my post and helped me sort out my dream of getting the boat in the water after 2 yeras of restoring her and the engine hopefully this is the last of it. other than my next topic ht leads.

Thanks again all

"Mark, getting one of those resistors either from a VP dealer or from a VP boneyard should be neither difficult nor expensive. Also, there is no reason why you cannot use a different alternator (a Delco Remy for example) with single wire. I have used both systems on VP applications, and the only difference is that the single wire may or may not charge the battery with the engine at idle, while the 3-wire will charge under any conditions. No big deal if you are not using the engine say for trolling or some other operation that requires you to run it at idle for long periods of time.

Good luck in completing your restoration project."
