i have a 1974 50hp evinrude to

i have a 1974 50hp evinrude took it out on water the motor got really hot started smoking and stalled when it cooled down it started back up how do i make sure the water pump is working if i put muffs on it the water will come out hole what is there to check to make sure it is cooling the water pump or anything eles thanks

"Forget the muffs, and put the lower unit in a barrel/drum with water level about 5" ABOVE where gear case joints with leg (water pump submerged). Then start engine!
Most likely You may have killed the thermostat during overheat and need to replace it."

"When i GO FULLTHROTTLE THE ENGINE QUITS IMMEDIATELY AND WON'T START AGAIN. lAST OUT i WENT FOR 30 MIN ON 3/4 THROTTLE AND IT RAN GREAT, STOPPED FOR A MINUTTE AND THEN WENT FULL THROTTLE FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS AND THEN QUIT IMMEDIATELY. pLEASE HELP. I think it may be overheating but the alarm does not sound. Envinrude 120 V4. Lots of water coming out of engine."

"Make sure you have the right oil mixter, if it is oil injected make sure the injector is working. A good way to test is to run pre mixed gas and see if it still overheats, It will smoke but at least you know your getting oil."
