Hi I have a 1982 Evinrude 115

Hi I have a 1982 Evinrude 115 hp that has a new water pump and thermostats.. when I run it for the first time after sitting up for a couple of weeks it overheats but when it cools down and I start it and let it run it doesn't overheat.. What could be the cause ? Also when I was tightening the bolts holding the thermostat cover on I heard a sound that sounded like something cracked is it possible that the engine when it sits drains all the water out and thats why it overheats when it has been sitting ? Have you actually measured the surface temp of heads when alarm triggers?
When you replaced your t-stats, did you also replace your HP poppet valves?
Condition of your spark plugs?

"It's normal to have the water drain completely out of the powerhead when the engine is shut down. The water pump, if operating normally, fills the powerhead water passages within a matter of seconds.

When you say that the engine overheats, I assume that the overheat warning horn starts sounding off?

Something sounded like it cracked? The housing between the thermostat housing and the engine is a bakelite (sp?) type material which will crack if not installed properly. I'd suggest that you remove that assembly and double check your work."

Thanks you guys for answering so fast.. The motor overheats at idle and yes I mean the alarm sounds however I have no way to tell what temperature the engine is and yes I did replace the poppet valves.. JOE REEVES If I did crack the housing what would that cause the engine to do ? Thanks again for the help and quick response..

"That cracked housing, if a crack exists should cause some water leakage. However, it's always possible that something was out of line internally (thermo, poppet, whatever) and something went wrong in that area.

Frankly, if it were me, I'd dismantle that thermo assy and also drop the lower unit to double check every aspect of the work. Something is obviously wrong.
