Overheating Problem...

I have a 1968 Evinrude Sportsman with 155HP Buick 225 Motor. Took the boat out and noticed a couple things.

#1 It is Only "Peeing" out the Left Side of the Sterndrive.

#2 When running the Boat at Mid RPM's, the Overheat Light will come on.

Why would the Sterndrive only Pee out the One Side? The Impeller is obviously
working??? If the Motor is Getting Water to both sides of the Engine, what would make it
overheat. Motor has New Plugs, Wires, Cap, Rotor, Oil, Filter Etc...

Thanks!
Steve

G'day Steve,

As long as the water is coming out one side, it shouldn't be a problem. With these systems, the water comes in from both sides of the "bearing", where the Pee holes are, and then join up, before being distributed to the engine, then the Exhaust Manifolds, before being exited out through the Exhaust and into the Leg.

I had a similar problem with mine, and I replaced the Thermostat and problem solved. But, I had converted the cooling system to a Closed System, using a Heat Exchanger as I am always in Salt Water. Are you running Raw Water cooling, or a closed system?

I also purchased a Laser hand-held Temperature Gun, and did some spot checks, and it turned out that the Dash Board Temperature Gauge was incorrect. Plus, it was interesting reading all the temperatures I "aimed" the gun at.

Further, as the Engine Revs went up, the increased speed of the Alternator changed the temperature reading on the Dash Gauge, which meant that the increasing voltage output, had an effect on the readings.

Bruce.

Funny, Bruce...I replaced my Thermostat, and it STILL overheats. I have the sterndrive peeing out ONLY one side, and it STILL overheats. Im ready to take off the " leg " and have the impeller changed. I DID remove the Waterpump on the engine (thinking it was bad) and its like new !!!

grease the swivel bearing -through the hole on the front side of the drive's exhaust housing. just above the chin of the anti ventilation plate - need a small diameter grease gun coupling
