Module burn

"Twin 1990 454

Module burned out on old distributor. For a few dollars more, I bought a distributor, coil, wire package. Purchased from trusted online seller, Mallory brand distributor and wire set. Coil make unknown. Set was specified for GM big block 454. Spark plugs are new.

With new parts installed and running 10mins., serious coil overheating occured (on both engines ). Distributor very hot as well. So hot, the oil was leaking out of the coil. I checked the voltage off the resistor, 9.5.

Everything wired exactly as Mallory specified. Replaced the coil and same problem.

Any ideas, should I go to a larger resistor to drop voltage to 7.5 or 8. Mallory distributor number 9-26306.

Any suggestions. I'm stuck at the dock.

I'd buy a full 12 volt coi

I'd buy a full 12 volt coil and tos out the ballast resister completely.

It sounds like your coil is getting too much voltage.

I like it and I'll do it.

I like it and I'll do it.

Any suggestions on brands for a full 12 volt coil?

Any quality brand will do. Ju

Any quality brand will do. Just be sure it'll fit your coil holder.

12v coil has a built in resist

12v coil has a built in resistor. I went this route as well. purchase pertronix ignitor and used their coil. Recommend however that you buy the epoxy filled coil instead of the oil filled.

A 12v coil for a ballast resis

A 12v coil for a ballast resistor application has a built in resistor. Normal 12 volt coils do not.

I read about the Pertronix fla

I read about the Pertronix flamethrower II. I use a mallory electronic ignition distributor.

What does everyone think about this coil and will I have a compatibility issues with the Mallory? This comes oil filled or epoxy filled. Any suggestions

Thanks
