"Worked on the kids 9.9 that was overheating last summer. After they had it looked at several times at different marina shops nothing was found, but a bill for looking.
Anyway the water pump was fine, no problem with the thermostat, Good flow out the pisser, everything checked fine.
We pulled the head off and it was very easy to see that the water passages were plugged with a lime type of deposit. Vinegar was used to soak the water passages for several days while renewing with fresh vinegar often. One could hear the snapping and popping of the deposit at first. A bit of gentle picking and scraping in between and it cleaned up nicely. The problem is gone!
As far as we can find out this engine was only on small ohio inland lakes and not what I would call really dirty. The deposit looked like how an old coffee pot gets inside. Not that bad of a job taking the head off either. Just need to make sure where the timing marks are when putting it back together.
Wanted to post something and maybe help someone else out with the same problem. Sometimes you just need to do it yourself."
