Overheating 200 2 stroke

Thanks to guyjg and jerryjerry05 for the battery cable help. Now my 1985 200 Merc fires right up but now is overheating. I plugged up the fitting on the top of the motor that the water pressure hose fits on because I haven't got that hose yet. New impeller yesterday and there is water squirting out of the little indicator hose at the back of the motor but it is not a steady stream. After about a minute running fine it stops squirting and it looks like exhaust is coming out of that hole. Then the motor quits and when I try to restart it, the buzzer in the control box starts singing. I'm assuming it's the overheating alarm. Any ideas? Thanks much.

Unplug it to see if water is gushing out of it. RU using it in saltwater? Mineral buildup in the cooling jacket can stop water flow to a trickle. Check the T'stats and popit valves. Need a SN to look it up.
