Overheating 1971 55hp motor

The warning alarm under my das

The warning alarm under my dash goes off sporadically and I traced the wire back to the engine and I guess it's for overheating....How do I prevent it from overheating? Can you guess this is my first boat?

2. buy one of thoes water muffs, this allows you to screw in a garden hose to supply water to your engine

then crank the engine and see if water comes out the top exhaust port. (make sure you turn the water on first)

Nother question...the boat doesn't have a power trim, nor a manual trim as far as I can see...does anyone have a pic of a manual trim so I can see what I need?"
 
Is there a bar that the motor

Is there a bar that the motor sits against?
it would be horizontal and probably go through a hole on either side of the the motor mount.
This would have several sets of holes to allow you to move the bar toward or away from the back of the boat (Transom).
