My 30 HP Mariner was overheating at idle - temperature dropped rapidly with increasing throttle. Pulled the LU, opened the pump housing and this is what I found (see photo - 1 impeller vane bent in wrong direction). I'm thinking at least a 20% reduction in pumping capacity.
Not sure how this happened, or how it could. Took photo yesterday, then removed impeller from housing. Impeller blade still has "reverse" set this a.m.
Only thing I can think of is that last time I had LU off I was having trouble getting drive shaft splines lined up - may have inadvertently turned drive shaft partial turn counter clockwise in effort to line things up.
Oh well. Live and learn. Put it back together with a new impeller and, hopefully, overheating problem solved.
