Overheat alarm test

Is there and easy and quick way to see if my overheat alarm is working?

I just removed my thermostat and found the cage broken off on both sides. I put the stat in hot water with a new one to compare. The old one never opened because of the broken cage. Now I suspect that the engine might have overheated and that my overheat alarm is not working.

Any help appreciated.

Thank you. That's what I thought, but was not sure.

That is the one in the back of the head. I removed the screw and tried to pry it out. But, It's really in there. Will I damage anything if I just yank it out? Or can I ground it at the connection where it plugs in.

Assuming the key must be on and kill lanyard must be hooked up? Does the engine need to be running? Or does the ignition just need to be on?
