"I guess my lower unit is in t

"I guess my lower unit is in trouble....a few days ago it was difficult to get it into
reverse, and it would grind instead of engaging...yesterday I noticed an intermittent
grinding in forward at idle speed....I took off the lower unit and drained it finding
obvious fine metal in the oil.
Here's is the question....I really don't want to shell out $1600 for a rebuilt lower
unit....Can I rebuild it myself ? I am very good mechanically with some experience on major
items on my family's cars...I have never torn down a transmission, but I figure that as
transmissions go, this should be fairly un-sophisticated....does anyone who has done this or attempted a lower unit overhaul have any advice ? Any good manuals you can recommend ?...what about the water pump ?
Thanks for any help

"I can't give technical ad

"I can't give technical advice, but it only cost me $500 to have mine rebuilt. Mine was an outboard. It was always tough to put into rev. The mechanic replaced the clutch dogs (not sure if that is the name) and it was better than new. Seems original's had 6 teeth forward and 3 for rev. Now 6 both ways.

Mercury manuals are the best and most $$$. Well worth it. Step by step and part numbers for most items. You will need serial # when ordering. My merc has 6 different coil options. Serial #'s will get you the right book.... good luck"
