over propped?

Hello:

I am running a 1988 34 foot Tollycraft with 454 Crusaders. The boat weighs 17000 lbs. The original props appear to be 19 x 19. The survey says velvet drives with 1.88 ration. I cannot get much above 3000 rpms and 13 knots. The hull and props are clean.

Does this sound like an over prop situation? What would be the effect of a lower pitch besides higher rpms. Might I expect a higher cruising speed as well.

Thanks.

Seems that you need to assess a few more things before jumping on the over propped issue in my opinion. Is this your first uses of the boat? have you had previous experience with higher WOT ? It appears that in 22 years, somewhere the props must have been adequately sized before this situation popped up. While the initial symptoms scream over propped, there is likely underlying reasons the boat is not performing differently so unless you actually had never had it over 3000 before it is possible that this is the case. Seems though there may be more to it and too suspect for other issues

Sorry, too much Law and Order television at my house..... ;)

concur with Knuckle47....I'd start by make sure the ignition advance mechanisms are working. Very common for them to rust up, especially around salt water.

You watch that all the tme as well? (They're running L & O marathons on the FX channel.)

Start with a tune up and compression test (if needed) before messing with the props. I assume the hull and props are clean? Doesn't take much junk on them to slow a boat down.

My brother and his wife used to watch that "STUFF" all the time. I would call and ask" hey, what are your doing?.....watching Law and Order" . Now anytime nothing "good" is on TV, my wife finds it on SOME Channel...its on 5 or 6 stations SOME at the same time!

How about carbs? Flame arrester plugged. 4 barrel not opening.
As to Law & Order I have you guys beat. My boat had a staring role. It was used in an episode called the Dead wives club. The captian of the S I ferry that hit the pier committed suicide in MY cabin. Season 15 episode 2 aired 9/22/04. Took about 8 hours to film a 2 minute shot. Got a couple tanks of gas out of it

Hey, thast is interesting... NOW I GOTTA GO NUTS looking for it, of course with 20 years worth of re-reruns....it may be on again soon

I agree with the other posts, make sure the engines are performing first. I have a 1975 30' Chris Craft TSF, the weight is close and it has twin 454's with hurth 1.61 trannys. I run 17x17 and it is still slightly overproped. 3000rpms on each engine (staying out of the 4bbl) it runs 16 knots. If I remember correctly WOT was 26 knots.
