"hi guys, its been a while but I still read daily to learn good tips. while idling this morning (fishing)I noticed my temp rising almost to the red.I felt risers and very warm.I shut it down and raised leg to see if I picked up a plastic bag around leg.Didnt see one.started back up and ran at 1000 rpm and it seemed to cool back down. Ran home at 3500rpm seemed great but warmed up while entering marina.raw water pump 3 mon.old and thermostat 3 months also.manifolds and risers 1 year old. check pump first then therm.??? am I on the right track?? thanks Cam"

"Cam, there are a few other very important aspects of your cooling system that you may not be considering here.

**Pivot tube lower O-ring..... the one between the lower unit and the bottom of the pivot tube. This must be replaced occasionally.... particularly when servicing the lower unit.

**Water neck fitting, the "beaded" gasket underneath the water neck and the S hose fit/clamp. The Water Neck fittings are very prone to corrosion, and should be considered a "wear item", IMO.

Also, and a somewhat long shot:
In the Johnson and Jabsco line of crankshaft pumps that can be factory or a replacement...., there are two size pumps.
Both small pumps use the same impeller.

However, of the two larger pumps, the Johnson impeller is .090" shorter than the Jabsco impeller.
Johnson impeller width = 1.900"
Jabsco impeller width = 1.990"
Both impellers use the same shaft spline.
Both diameters and fins are same! (Duh!)
Both impellers appear to be identical at a glance.

If you were to have the larger Jabsco pump, and were sold the Johnson impeller (and yes, this happens all to often), the thrust surface area will not seal within the pump housing and/or cover plate.

Also, on this topic..... both the deep thrust surface and the cover plate thrust surfaces must be in excellent condition regardless of which crankshaft pump you have.
Scoring of the cover is quite common!

Give those some inspections..... you may just find your problem."

"thanks Rick,pivot tube o ring

"thanks Rick, pivot tube o ring new 3 mon. ago when I did all that work.If a impellor is worn due to lack of water will you notice it more at a low rpm or a high rpm?? I will start with that on wednesday one thing at a time. I learnt that from you. thanks again Cam"

"Yes, an impeller that is run

"Yes, an impeller that is run dry can become damaged in short order... not always, but is risky!
If I will be firing an engine almost immediately after the impeller install...., I'll lube it and the pump housing with a product that begins with WD ! (I've not seen WD harm one.... petroleum products may damage the rubber... and I don't care for the dish soap idea!)

What about the Water Neck? Replaced? New Beaded Gasket? Bead facing Down?"

the water neck was replaced a

the water neck was replaced a couple of years ago and I dont recall but I hope a new gasket was installed correctly. I did it but my memory is mush!!!

"I got lucky this time I think

"I got lucky this time I think. I changed out the impellor and put 8 hours of running and fishing and a nice cool engine. thanks again Ricardo, Im back fishing. Cam"

"Hi El. ya, there seems to be a few hanging in here. Im averaging 2 to 3 each morning out. I cant seem to get any big ones though.7to 13 pds seem to be it but some others are picking them up in the low 20s.thats pretty big for the winter time. Its been so calm and on sunday there was a pod of 8 to 10 killer whales heading your way. . Cam"

"Thanks for the report, Cam. B

"Thanks for the report, Cam. But I ain't trolling for killer whales... I'd rather stick to winter springs.

Now seriously, 10-15 lbs is a decent size for winter springs in my books, though 20s is even better

. Those winter springs are really tasty with all that white fat melting while you cook them in the oven or the barbecue. Haven't gone fishing since November and I still have my boat winterized...though that may change soon, as we are not having much of a winter with this "El Niño" year."

"Hey, if you guys insist upon hi-jacking this Volvo Penta related thread, will you at least refer to these fish by their Swedish names?

"But Ricardo, we are not hijacking anything. Both Cam and I have Volvo Penta engines and drives on our boats; and since we use our boats for fishing, I guess our discussion could be considered Volvo Penta related.

Don't know about their Swedish name, but we refer as "winter springs" to feeder salmon otherwise known as tyee, king, blackmouth, Columbia River salmon, and a few other names."
