Outdrive rebuild

"Recently found a problem with

"Recently found a problem with my mercruiser outdrive, high rpm's no go.After reading alot on this site, narrowed it down to the outdrive. Put the shifter into forward and am able to spin the prop while hearing a clicking near the top of the outdrive.Like everyone cash is tight and will have to tackle this myself or wait until spring. Just wanted to know what kind of problems I'll need to be prepared for since this will be my first attempt at an outdrive. Thanks for any help!"

How did you exclude the engine

How did you exclude the engine coupler? Prop spin/click is normal in one direction.

"Excluded the coupler because

"Excluded the coupler because couldn't see anything turning at the rear of the engine when turning the prop. may have missed it. Had this problem three or four times, changed the prop & it went away.happened again took it to a mechanic and he said he couldn't find anything but he changed the hub and it ran fine. before this last time I had it running great at 45mph. Next trip out went to get on plane and nothing. long trip at 5 mph. Left out that it's a 1998 alpha."

"ok went and checked it out, t

"ok went and checked it out, turns in the one direction dependant on which gear it's in. YOU WERE RIGHT! So do couplers go bad slowly? with the symptoms I've had I would have thought it would go all at once. Changed hubs & props so far to fix it. If it sounds like the coupler to you let me know so I can start saving for a mechanic (I know my limitations). Thanks."

"Hook up the hose and muffs to

"Hook up the hose and muffs to the OD and look at the out drive shaft in the coupler on the back of the engine. If it's spinning all is good. No spin, $500-$850. Check the OD; check the oil level and then check the drain plug for metal fags. Then remove the prop and place in forward then reverse AT IDLE.

Last time out, if you didn't hear any loud OD grinding, clunk, bang and loud pop noise it may be OK."

"OK, last night was a wash out

"OK, last night was a wash out rained light heck tonight folowed your instructions to the letter.
the coupler was spinning great. thought I was good to go.BUT

when I pulled the outdrive plug there's metal shavings! SOB! Not sure if I should just drain it and refill and hope for the best or do I need to have the OD rebuilt? HELP ! PLEASE! Obviously if ther are shavings I'm in the sh_t! So where do I go from here"

W/the engine idling did you pu

W/the engine idling did you put it in gear to see if the prop spins? Did it make ant noise?

Pull the cap off the OD and look at the drive gears. Let us know what you see; pics. would be great. Is th oil level correct?

"Correct me if I'm wrong g

"Correct me if I'm wrong guy, but some metal flaking and shavings are normal? Naturally if you find a chuck of gear or metal, it's a bad day. But as the gears mesh and go one with their happy spinning life, it will create some flakes, thru normal wear, and the magnet on the plug is doing it's job by collecting them and holding on."

Metal dust and a few tiny frag

Metal dust and a few tiny fragments are normal. What you are seeing indicates what could be excessive wear that needs to be investigated further.

Thought I already posted this

Thought I already posted this but it's not showing up. I drained & refilled the OD. Didn't notice any more metal in the oil just what was stuck to the drain plug. Oil looked ok. Started it up and put into forward gear @ Idle. Sounded a little nasty going into gear but prop spun in both gears. Couldn't tell if it was making any noise due to the exhaust and the water from the ears.Pulled the prop and am installing a new hub just in case. Didn't take the top cover of the OD off cuz I couldn't find the required torque for reinstall. Any further suggestions are more than welcome. Thinking of taking it out just to see if the GD hub was the issue.

"I think I may have found my p

"I think I may have found my problem(other than not knowing enough about I/O's)Pulled the hub and it looked like crap. even had a thin slimy coating between the hub and the prop. Installed new hub and old prop. Have just about 1/4" movement on the prop, according to the manual that should be good right? Guess I'll find out when I get on the water."

Finally got out on the water t

Finally got out on the water this past weekend. The new hub made a big difference. I was able to get on plane but not as fast as I'd like and top speed was not more than 25mph then it started to play the slipping game. Think it may be the prop?
