"I WAS READING UP ON MY OUT DRIVE BEFORE I CHANGED THE FLUID AND CAME ACROSS A A STATEMENT SAYING I NEED TO FILL IT FROM THE BOTTOM WITH A GEAR OIL PUMP, IS THIS NORMAL AND IF SO WHY CANT I FILL FROM THE TOP HOLE IF IT ALL GOES TO THE SAME PLACE, JUST WONDERING."

Bottom filling is the correct

Bottom filling is the correct method. Filling from the vent hole and you'll get air pockets trapped in the OD and not get sufficient oil in it.

Pump is cheap. maybe $10. cheaper online. Used one for the first time this weekend. Make sure you screw the pump hose to the fill hole before you put it on the bottle. unless you find one where the screw in connector swivels you'll be spinning the lube bottle as you screw it in.

"Jeff,
my dad does the same thing. It is easier to read all lower case than all upper case. Plus is takes up less space!

Guys to find it necessary to go back and check the fluid level after a while to make sure there wasn't to much air left behind? possibly top off a little?"

If you have an Alpha-1 OD I be

If you have an Alpha-1 OD I believe it takes exactly 1 quart. Also when draining the old oil check for water intrusion (milkshake looking oil) which indicates either a bad gasket or a crack somewhere in the OD. That will give you something else to work on!
