Outdrive not going back on

Volvo penta dp-sm model.

replaced gimbal bearing but for the life of me I can not get the outdrive back on. It seems to catch about 2 inches from being totally in.

What am I doing wrong?

one guy said that I might have lots of grease at the end of the drive shaft and that would be stopping it from sliding all the way. Is that possible.

thanks in advance for any help.

A Marine Gimbal bearing has an articulating center race.
If the articulating center race is not aligned correctly, it may be preventing the propeller shaft splines from entering the drive coupler splines.

Yes........ the forward splined shaft of the universal shaft assembly, is referred to as a "propeller shaft".

Thanks for replying Rick. Actually it was a Volvo tech who told my mechanic to look for grease blocking the drive shaft. Between you and me I don't see how grease could stop it, am i right?

I am new to boating but I am pretty sure he used a alignment tool and it went all the way in so I am not sure where he thinks this grease was supposed to come from to block the drive shaft when a few minutes before the tool worked fine and no blockage.

Little background. Noise made when put in gear even at low speed. Sounds like a cable slapping the bottom of the boat When we pulled off the outdrive the bearing came with the outdrive and was stuck on the drive shaft and the bearing was bent. Every rotation it would hit inside the drive shaft area and that is where the noise was coming from. I do not believe that the gimbal bearing was put in correctly to begin with otherwise we would have had to use a puller to get it out. Correct?

If you could be so kind as to tell me how the alignment tool is used I will watch him this friday and make sure he is aligning it properly.

Thanks so much for you informative and quick reply.
