"Look at tag on the top of the drive just before the point where the top bellows fastens.
First couple digits is drive type, e.g. 27x is a 270 drive..etc. Letter stamped at the end will tell you the drive reduction ratio... just so long as no one goe creative doing a repair."

"The serial number location that Robert suggests may work on the AQ series drives, but this will be in a different location on the later drives.

How about this: You give us a little more information as to what year this is? Maybe even the engine type, model number, etc?

That helps US help YOU!

You can also click on a member's name and get a link to our email address. This will allow you to shoot a photo of the drive to one of us.

"the engine is a 1978 7.4 mercruiser, motor has been updated to a 1992 330 hp gm marine eng, out drive has hydraulic trim, close as i can tell by the schematics is a ,280,290. but there are sub models, 290a, aq. far as pics, i have it in several pieces, even the volvo store hasn't been able to find the serial # as of yet. nor the local dealer. thanks again kc"

200 series drives have the S/N as I indicated.
Send us (or give us a link to) some picture of the drive... even the pieces. The bottom of the drive w/props and the top most are the most important.

"Agree, either Robert or myself can identify most any of the AQ series drives. Maybe even shoot photos of the parts to the both of us.... two heads, they say, are better than one, ya know!"

"Its a 280 drive. To determine if its the correct reduction ratio, rotate the vertical drive shaft, into the lower unit counting the revs, until the prop shaft turns 10 times. If it takes 16 and a fraction revs, its the correct reduction for a V8. The S/N tag has apparently been removed from the transmission."

"Kevin,
From the rounded exhaust port, it would appear to be a 280 lower unit. This lower will fit any of the AQ series Intermediate housings with the proper shimming being done.
The drive is painted a non-standard color for this year model.

From the appearance of the top cap of the Transmission and the double bolt helmet pin, it's likely a late 280 or a 275 single prop drive.

Robert, remember that the transmission reduction ratio is part of the equation when taking a ratio reading. So in essence, you'd need to have the transmission attached to accurately determine this.
The over-all gear ratio will be stamped into the prop shaft bearing carrier. If no one has change out a lower gear set, this will be accurate. Remove the ring anode, and the ratio number will be visible if you wire brush this area.
Choices are; 2.15:1, 1.89:1 and 1.61:1 for this drive.

Kevin, just what is it that you are needing or wanting to do?
I have many of these parts, and I have people from various areas ship these to me for repair, if that is something that would help you.

Rick"

Yep, I forgot that..! Kevin... make that "15 and a fraction turns" :)"

"thanks again for the help. i

"thanks again for the help. i have it apart as i am replacing all of the bushings, o rings and seals. the rest seems to be good. why i have the outdrive and transom ring out of the boat i am trying to do some preventative maintenence. here is a link to what i have been looking at for parts identification, http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/vp_sch_fs.html
in this schematic, the potentiometer and the hydraulic trim is the same as mine. i cant find one of the 280 schematics that look like the parts do on mine.
i do still need a hose connection which bolts to suspension fork, which itself is usable but not in the best of shape. and an anode ring. thanks again..kc"

"Kevin, Yes, that was rather helpful and a key component...... (which leads me to believe that we've been on a training exercise here.)

LOL

From the limited view that I have, I'd say that the transom shield is the small pin, first generation 290 that requires the SS tilt/trim cylinder swing bracket. (I haven't seen your main suspension fork yet)

Now, I asked this earlier..... what is it that you are needing/wanting to do?????

I ask this for a reason..... reason being that;
(a) some parts are very specific to this drive
(b) some parts are very interchangeable with this drive.
I can just about tell you all of which do, and all of which do not.

"sorry ricardo i posted what i needed but it kinda got lost in the posting.i am just changing out all the steering bushings and water tube o rings and seals.
i do still need a hose connection which bolts to suspension fork, which itself is usable but not in the best of shape. and an anode ring. thanks again.
my suspension fork is as shown in the schematic. the swing bracket is indeed stainless. i think you are right about the small pin 290. i ordered bushings for the 290. thanks again for all your patience and help. how did we ever live without the internet? kevin"

"Kevin, If it has this SS cyli

"Kevin, If it has this SS cylinder swing bracket, it is, without a doubt, a 290 drive.... small hinge pins.

The water neck fitting, gasket and some other parts are also available via Sierra if you have a source for Sierra.

Be very careful when pressing the "Pivot Tube" from the housing/suspension fork. These are soft. (likewise, the suspension fork hing pins)

NOTE: the friction fit is between the pivot tube and the Intermediate housing..... not in the fork.

"got it. thanks again ricardo,

"got it. thanks again ricardo, bushings and o rings came today. next i'll be ordering anode, water neck, etc. you know, people like you with a wealth of knowledge are really appreciated by people like me. this is my first in/out but i am very good with all things mechanical. the boat has a 1992 gm marine 454 which is getting rings and bearings, valves lapped. the motor doesnt have many hrs but had sat for about 3 yrs and got some rain water in a couple cylinders. so my first of these boat motor drive combos is in about 500 parts, but will be on the water within a couple months maybe a little sooner if the economy sends a couple jobs my way, thanks kevin cave"
