I just got a 78 bayliner with

I just got a 78 bayliner with 170B motors and 280 outdrives. Have since found out that my starboard motor needs replacing and ordered a GM straight 6 by mistake. So now have it around. Question is what would match up with the new motor and would it be to difficult to replace the outdrive to go with the new motor. Otherwise I am looking at having the old one rebuild and is kind of a time constraint where I live at in alaska.Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated.

"Theese engines are not in pro

"Theese engines are not in production anymore, and unfortunately the stern drives have a rather incommon gear ratio 1.95:1. However there are a few options:
1:rebuild the one You have, but mote that some parts may be dificult to get as spares.
2:Repalce them with GM4,3 2BBL (175 hp), but you have to change the fly wheel housing and exhaust as well.
3: New units with drive, but quite some work at the transom.
Check out a Sweedish company: Lidingomarina.com,
they are specialist in the old Volvos."

Belive both outdrives are good

Belive both outdrives are good and one engine is good so if I could replace with gm motor that would be great. Is the one I have going to work or would I need a different one. ( have straight 6 GM 250 ) Could you let me know where to get and how steps needed in changing fly wheel and housing?
Thanks again!

"I have been searching around

"I have been searching around among some Swedish dealers and contacts concerning parts for rebuild etc in this case, sorry but the answer is rather negative. Not much more in stock, Even worse when it comes to marinisation and fuel system.
To replace one engine with a GM 6 cylinder is probably not an optimal option as (weight and torque/power not to forget)You will need all the marine parts and fuel system (carbs etc).
Theese enganes were sold as 170Hp, but hardly managed 150.
I have in my time replaced some with either GM3,0 (4 cyl in twin inst) or GM 4,3 (V6 in single installations).
My recomndation in your case will be to replace both units complete with drives to twin 3,0 HO versions Mercruiser or Volvos and sell of the units you have incl the 'spare' GM."

As you can tell I am no mechan

As you can tell I am no mechanic and although I have worked as deck hand and commercial fishing for quite some time I am not skilled in rebuilding boats at all. I was hoping to change the housing and just install a new engine but as you say i now understand the wieght and torque issue. So you are saying that I should completely strip both engines and outdrives and replace with new updated ones? My next question as being a novice to all this is how much alterations to the boat would this take and cost of new ones?
Thanks you!!

"For this I think You need a &

"For this I think You need a 'local' answer. As for engines, check local and internet prices. For the job, check local prices.
I am a bit far off, in Malaysia!"

Well thanks for the info you d

Well thanks for the info you did have and think I am just going to have the one rebuilt for this season and then repower the whole thing inbetween seasons.
