Outboard vibrates only when trimmed down at planing speed

I have a 97 evinrude 115. E115eleua. It has a reman Powerhead. We just put on a new starter motor for it. Worked great. Only now I noticed there's a vibration, as in something came loose, or is exposed and rubbing up against something. It only does it at planing speed and motor trimmed down.

start at the 20 second mark this is when it starts to vibrate roughly. Once you speed up and trim up its gone. The guy that put it on did pull off this rubber sleeve looking thing while removing the old starter motor and starter solenoid switch. Could this just be the rattle culprit?

What I hear is not a rattle nor a vibration.... it is more of a noise, sounds like something hitting hard!

The only rubber sleeve that I can think of is a sleeve that protects the starter solenoid, a cushion so to speak that allows the clamp to secure the solenoid without risking cracking it. It should be there!

I'd suggest that you run that engine without the hood and have someone watching that powerhead while the rig is underway.

That's what's been ripped off. It is the original. Could this be something really serious? I mean yea it shouldn't do that, but as you see once you hit plane speed it's gone

And this did start when we put the new starter on. I also have the two power trim relays that got broken off by the shop. Just the piece that holds them in tack, could them hitting the block hard also be the culprit?

I am, I'm going to a more local one. Prices are higher but I've heard more good. When this starter issue happened this wasn't from the shop. This was from a shade tree mechanic recommended by a friend who nobody ever had trouble from.

Without actually being there, we have no way of knowing.

I'd suggest that you run that engine without the hood and have someone watching that powerhead while the rig is underway.

Is it possible that it's from the shift lever? You can feel it in the throttle somewhat. Where is it located? Look up part number 0311015 on this site, that's what got taken off but never put back on. Could that cause this vibration? can't run the motor without the cowling on water will go all over the lower end of the block

look at this picture. This little rod that my finger is on, it's on top of the two carbs. I just moved the shifter in gear with motor off, just to see if I see anything, this metal rod is rubbing up against some oil reservoir, I think from the vro, and it's hitting almost exactly at the the throttle position it was when it rattles when I take off. Guess it has a little bend to it

Just an FYI it was the front engine latch making the noise I had spoken Of, only way the noise goes away is if I unlatch the front of the upper engine cowling. I only know this cause one day I unlatched the front and the noise disappeared, I hooked it back up front and the noise came back, now I run with just the back end latched down, and leave the front unlatched

The portion of the latch (retainer) that attaches to the hood is adjustable... at least that the way they've always been. Turn the hood upside down and look at the retainer.

Re: hello joe

Howdy joe, first time i've been on here in yrs.:was lookingfor yA:,..wayne

Hi'ya Wayne.... Good to see you're back. I just noticed on the previous page that a "jwbmarine" was listed and I wondered that could be the JWMarine of Texas that I was so acquainted with. There wasn't a "B" after the JW originally was there? How are things going for you?

I backed out of the iBoats forum... just took up too much of my time... besides much of the problems pertained to engines manufactured long after I retired... foreign to me.

Me?... Had bout with cancer in October of 2015, bladder and prostate removed in February of 2016. They say I'm cancer free now and I must be as I feel great, still doing my own yard work, repairing my own vehicles, haven't been up the the roof yet but I had the two huge oak trees taken down so the roof doesn't need cleaning now as often. No leaves up there.

This August I'll be 85, look much younger, feel like i'm about 38, and I'm quite active. Only complaint I have is that having those two organs removed knocked the Hell out of my *** life! (Joe)
