Outboard sputtering....

So I just bought an outboard a nineteen sixty nine Evinrude. It was running fine up until yesterday and then the motor started sputtering and has lost power. I checked the plugs, put new ones in change. The gas made the right mixture.
And I still don't know What the issue could be there is no-kill Switch on the motor but there are lines coming from the stator for a kill switch. It seems as if there was a short so I taped off the Lines that come from the stator the kill switch. And it seems to be running better a little bit but still has some spotter to it. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

A wonderfully simple and well made motor.----Did you install a new water pump impeller after you bought this motor.-----Need information to help you.----Post the actual compression values here.----And does spark jump a gap of 5/16" on both leads , yes or no ?

No I have not changed the impeller. It pees water just fine. I have to check the compression still to tell if it's rings or not. And I will have to check the gap in the plugs as well. I will get back with an update soon

Spak is tested with a testy device NOT the spark plug.----A crude test device can be made with wire , glue and cardboard.-----Have you tested the overheat warning light?-----A golden rule is -----Install a new impeller if you do not know age or condition of this rubber part !!

I was not aware that it was a 9.5 so no overheat warning on it.-----The motor would just keep running till it destroyed itself.----Easy fix here.----Note--- I started working on these simple motors before yours was made.----Good luck with it.
