On all my motorcycles I would get a service manual from the dealership that the mechanics would use, I would like to get one for my outboard motor also. Its a 2000 Johnson 50 hp 2 stroke model# J50PLSSM. A downloadable one would be best. I have the Seloc manual now, but dosen't have the in depth spec's that the oem manual does, the gearbox only has how to remove it,,,not to usefall to me. Is there a site that sells the downloads? I was looking at this one= http://www.repair-guidebook.com/199...5-1996-1997-1998-1999-2000-2001-pdf-download/. Has anyone used this site before or know of a better on?

The site from which to obtain Johnson and Evinrude outboard manuals is the Ken Cook Company's www.Outboardbooks.com website

Here are the books for your engine https://www.outboardbooks.com/manual/J50PLSSM/Johnson/

The manual in your link seems to cover the same wide range of HPs and years as the Seloc manual ( which can be found on the boatinfo website). Are you sure it is not the Seloc one

Daselbee..... Aren't there specific manuals for each specific model anymore... that is, one manual covers just the one model engine... and that's it?

Yes. This OMC manual covers all models listed. Different than what you and I are used to. Also look at the year "2000", OMC in tough times.
Some models didn't even get a manual thru that timeframe.

One of the things that puzzles me is on the gearcase part diagram is item #3, a screw w/ gasket, what is it doing??? Has me puzzled. #55 is for the shift linkage,

ITYWF that it is the retaining screw for the bearing #2

Reverse kept jumping out of gear. Gradually got where it would jump out even at idle. Upon pulling the gear it was well rounded. Linkage adj. Was good.

Actually very clean. A little dust budup on the magnet drainscrew, norm amount. Bearing all looked good. Will be checking them again after cleaned and as installing.

Well got it all together, took it for a day on the bay, Awesome shifting! The water pisser is the best flow now! Pressing the prop seal was a bit of a dilemma, I didn't have any sockets that fit correctly and my metal lathe is still disassembled from a recent move, otherwise I would of made it, But I found the lid off of the PJ blaster fit perfect, A putty knife on the lid and it tapped in perfect, when seated the lid broke...perfect! Getting the shifter linkage onto the saddle on the prop-shaft was intriguing, I greased up the saddle, squished it on the shaft end and then pushed the prop-shaft in through the LU. I used fishing line looped around the end of the shift-rod linkage and when inserted down I was able to get the saddle aligned with the shift-rod forked end, cut the string and insert the screw. Thank you all for any help and thank you marineengine for speedy shipping of parts!
