Outboard Motor Decision

Hey Guys,

It's getting to be that time of year where cabin fever sets in, and I'm contemplating what to do with my little "collection" of outboards.

I'm trying to decide whether I should (A) Sell them as-is, (B) Repair & Sell, or (C) Repair & Use

My ultimate goal is to have a good, reliable motor on my 14ft aluminum which is rated for up to 35hp, and while the new etecs look pretty awesome, they aren't exactly cheap , then again neither is sinking 100's of dollars into maintenance.

Anyway, here are the outboards I currently have & condition:

  • Johnson 9.5
    • Year: 1965
    • Model: MQ-11C
    • Missing the hood/cowling. Overall ran ok last year but ideally it could use some TLC
  • Johnson 9.9 Sailmaster
    • Year: 1980
    • Model: J10SELCSE
    • Needs new transom mounting bracket as current one has a crack in it. Electric start functions but temperamental so would probably need new wiring and/or starter. Ran strong last year but I'd still say could use a little bit of TLC

Curious to hear some opinions on what to do with them and what reasonable/realisitic selling prices would be (both as-is and fixed up)?

Thanks in advance!

The 9.5 is second year of production.-----Cowling with knob on hood was only used in the 64 / 65 model years.------Had some issues with motor shaking at idle speeds.----Yet some folks want them because of the light weight at 60 lbs.----The sailmaster would be an extra long shaft.----Electric start and battery charging.----Those command good coin in some areas.----Starter may just need cleaning and new brushes, an easy fix.----Nuetral start switch may need adjusting too.
